CMS Profile: WordPress

WordPress is both blogging software and a content management system. As blogging software, it should be considered one of the first possible choices. As a CMS, it is both simple and limited.

WordPress advantages include the fact that it is free, easy to install, widely popular and well-supported by the user community. It has numerous extensions to enhance its capabilities.

The product has features including search, user comments, pinging of blogging update services and categorization of content based on keywords. It is especially useful for sites that want to organize content into broad categories.

But the content can't easily be organized into more complex and sophisticated subcategories or individual sections. It is difficult to create a sophisticated architecture because the menuing system is limited. It also is difficult to create a permanent page and link it to menus.

Although anyone with WordPress can develop a graphically pleasing site, the limitations of the software also make it difficult to manipulate designs beyond the basic site template.

WordPress is an excellent choice for any blogging environment. The application is best suited for a personal site, a small business site or an extension of a much larger site. It also is a good choice for a small media site with limited needs and technical support.
