Mobile Advertising Trends Raise Concerns on Revenue

Best Mobile Design May Be No Mobile Design

A Web site with rising mobile traffic may lead someone to think that the site should have a separate design for mobile users.

It is understandable to think that way because mobile traffic worldwide is skyrocketing.

Any site with mobile analytics will probably see that its own mobile visitors have grown at a much faster pace than visitors using desktop computers.

But producing a mobile design presents several challenges:

  • It costs time if someone on the staff does it.
  • It costs money if it’s outsourced.
  • It may not pay for itself for a long time.

At a recent Google AdSense workshop, the presenters enthusiastically supported the idea that all sites should have a mobile design.

Mobile Web Development

Mobile publishing develops two related products: mobile Web (content) and mobile apps (software).

Mobile Web content is the easiest to implement, most popular to use and has the fewest ongoing maintenance requirements. Its development usually requires simple scripting languages such as HTML and CSS.

Mobile apps are 1) A native app that must be installed on the device; 2) A Web app that resides on server and is accessed via the Internet. They provide the highest degree of control, require the most labor and provide the most targeting to a particular device. Their development usually require higher programming languages such as Java and C++.

The term “mobile app” often is misused to describe products that fall under mobile Web content, such as a PDF product. (more…)
